Some people kick the new year off with fireworks and champagne toasts. Geekier types do things like getting Windows 95 to run on a Nintendo 3DS.

In the wee hours of January 1st, a GBAtemp forum user who’d previously tried in vain to make Microsoft’s 20-year-old operating system boot finally succeeded. There’s even a video of the boot process taking place, complete with a post-improper shutdown ScanDisk run.

Not everyone was ready to believe that one of Nintendo’s dual-screen handhelds is capable of running Windows 95, so these uploads were met with some skepticism. Hours later, however, the original poster delivered the goods: a complete set of the files he used that allow anyone who wants to give it a go to boot Win95 on their 3DS. Once they’d been shared, it didn’t take long before a handful of other users had figured things out and posted their own images.

So how exactly do you get Windows 95 to run on a 3DS? With a little help from DOSbox and RetroArch — similar to how someone else made it work on a Samsung smartwatch. And though you might think it would be unbearably slow running in an emulator on a 268MHz ARM processor and a relatively small amount of RAM, it’s apparently not that bad. Sure, it takes quite a while to boot up, but that gives a bit of added retro charm, doesn’t it?

Of course, if you lack the necessary patience you can always hit the breaks before Windows 95 tries to boot and just launch your favorite old DOS games instead.
